Description:
While being employed at Kilometer Studios, we got the oppertunity to develop the official backpack of the Broloppet 2025 Race.
I led the design process from early requirements and concept development to the final product direction, ensuring the backpack aligned with both the event’s identity and the practical needs of thousands of participants.

List of Requirements
List of Requirements
The backpack had to be cost-efficient while meeting strict sustainability and functional demands. It needed to use low-impact materials, handle Sweden’s unpredictable summer weather, and be reusable long after race day. The design also had to stay lightweight, compact, and unisex—fitting a full change of clothes without adding unnecessary bulk.

Ideation & Development
Budget limits and strict requirements pushed the ideation toward smart, intentional design. By reducing materials and hardware, every detail had to earn its place. The 12–16L capacity shaped a compact, efficient silhouette that met all functional needs while staying cost-effective.

Design & Function
The rolltop closure removes the need for a zipper, reducing both cost and production complexity. Using only two G-hooks and stitched loop webbing, the bag gains a fully adjustable opening without extra hardware. Users can roll and secure the top at different heights, keeping the design flexible, minimalist, and budget-friendly.

Packable Feature
The packable design makes the backpack a versatile, space-saving companion—easy to store, easy to bring, and ideal as a secondary bag for day trips or extra items. It also significantly reduces shipping volume, cutting down on single-use packing materials like polybags.

Fabrics & Materials
One of the key budget decisions was choosing a fabric that was both affordable and aligned with all customer requirements. The material needed to strike the right balance between durability and functionality.
Polyester
Polyester is versatile, recyclable, and widely available, making it a practical choice for backpacks. Its stiffness, however, can cause creasing or wrinkling when folded, resulting in less smooth folds compared to softer fabrics like nylon.

400D Recycled Polyester
Nylon
With exceptional strength and a soft, low-crease finish, nylon enhances both durability and packability. Its lightweight nature supports the backpack’s compact, portable design while maintaining a polished appearance.

Material Decision
Due to the need for a lightweight yet strong fabric, nylon was selected for this project. Even if a thin polyester had been used, it would have added around 30 grams per bag, resulting in an overall weight increase of 1.26 tonnes across the full production run.
The product’s presentation is crucial, and using nylon helps minimize wrinkles during folding, ensuring the backpack maintains a clean, polished appearance for the user. This insight was a key finding during the sample-making process.
However, the bottom of the backpack required more stability when packed, making a slightly thicker and stiffer polyester an ideal choice for this area.

Branding & Wearability
The backpack was developed in collaboration with the “Broloppet 2025” running race, with key stakeholders requesting visible representation on the final product. As a result, the design needed to accommodate multiple logos along with a short explanatory text about the event. These branding elements were essential and integrated as a core part of the visual identity of the backpack.
